This is Lisselot

Lisselot lives in the Dominican Republic.

It is a small island about 90
miles south of the Florida Keys.  They share their island nation with Haiti.
She is the great, great, great, great granddaughter of slaves that escaped from their masters in Cuba.  Her language is Spanish.  Before me she never saw any other skin color than black.  Except for the leopard people.
"They live far from here in their own village,” she says.
They have a medical disorder that turns them pink with black spots, and that is why they are called the "leopard people." Most Dominicans fear these people.  It is believed they are evil, and have certain magical powers.
Their lives are not easy, but neither is Lisselot's.  She eats "a few times a week.  When I get really hungry, I go into the jungle and eat mangos and oranges, and things."
But she has to be careful. "Never go into the jungle at night.  If you do you my wind up a hot lunch or a snake, or giant tarantula, or a piranha."
She lives near the river Notre.  It is about the same color as chocolate milk. She gathers water like this and then boils it.  Then she lets it cool, so the mud will settle on the bottom and then she skims off the clear water. This water is then treated with water purification tablets. Without this process, Lisselot would soon die, from drinking the water!
She loves to go to school, and play with her friends.
"I want to be a teacher," she says.

I think Lisselot will make a great teacher!
